Fractional CTO — A CTO in your corner, before you can hire one.
You're not an engineer, and you shouldn't need to be. We give you senior technical steering: setting the direction, guiding the big architecture decisions, advising your developers and backing you up in front of investors. A few days a month, a clear remit, and a fixed monthly fee.
- 20+ years building startups
- Founded and exited a studio
- B Corp founder
- Fixed monthly fee
Sound familiar?
- You're not an engineer, and nobody senior is setting technical direction for your team.
- Your developers are good, but they're making calls that should never have landed on them.
- The technical choices in front of you are really business decisions, and nobody's treating them that way.
- You need a CTO, but that hire is six months and a six-figure salary away.
- You're heading into a raise, due diligence or an exit, and your technology needs to stand up to scrutiny.
What you get from a fractional CTO
Technical direction
We set the technical direction with you: what to build on, what to buy, what to leave alone, and in what order. Then we keep it on course with regular check-ins, so the big calls get made deliberately, not by whoever picked up the ticket. We don't run your standups or manage the day-to-day. Your team does that. We make sure it's heading the right way.
Architecture decisions
Architecture is where the expensive mistakes hide. We review the big decisions before they're made (data, hosting, integrations, security, what to build and what to buy) and explain each one in business terms: what it costs, what it gets you and what it rules out later. You shouldn't need an opinion on databases to run your business.
Advice for your team
Good developers without senior input end up making calls that shouldn't be theirs. We give your lead developer, in-house team or agency someone experienced to test ideas against, challenge estimates and settle disagreements. They keep doing the work. We make sure it's pointing the right way, and you get plain answers you can act on.
Investors and the board
When investors, your board or a buyer start asking technical questions, you'll have someone senior on your side. We help shape the technology story for a raise, prepare you for technical due diligence, and answer the hard questions directly, so you're never left defending decisions you can't fully explain.
From first chat to working together
A conversation
45 minutes on where your business is and what's holding it back. No deck needed, and no obligation either way.
A short diagnostic
A couple of weeks inside the business. You get a written report on what we found and what we'd do about it, whether or not we carry on working together.
Ongoing steering
A set number of days a month with a clear remit: regular check-ins with you and your team, architecture reviews, and support when investors come calling. Fixed monthly fee, reviewed every quarter.
Handover
The aim is always for the work to end. When the time's right, we help you hire a full-time CTO and hand over everything we've decided and why. We don't just disappear when the invoices stop.
What a good CTO changes
Without the right help
- Developers making architecture calls nobody has checked.
- Estimates you can't judge, and deadlines that keep slipping.
- Paying for rework when early shortcuts catch up with you.
- A tech story that wobbles when investors start asking questions.
With Lode in your corner
- Someone senior your team can take decisions to.
- Plain answers you can act on: what it costs, what it gets you, what it rules out.
- A clear technical plan your team is working to.
- Confidence in front of your board, investors and buyers.
Fractional CTO: your questions answered
What is a fractional CTO?
A senior technology leader who works with you part-time. At this stage that's mostly steering, not managing: setting the technical direction, guiding the big architecture decisions, advising your developers or agency, and representing the technology to investors and your board. Your team keeps doing the day-to-day work. We make sure it's pointing the right way, and that the decisions that matter get made well.
Will you manage our developers day to day?
No. Your lead developer or agency runs the day-to-day, from standups to sprint planning. We set the direction, review the big decisions, and we're there whenever your team needs a senior view. If you need someone managing the team full-time, we'll help you hire them.
What does a fractional CTO cost?
A fixed monthly fee for an agreed scope, not an hourly or day rate, so your costs are predictable and there's no reason for us to drag things out. The amount depends on the days per month and the remit, and we agree it before anything starts. The diagnostic that usually comes first is priced separately, so you can stop there if that's all you need.
How is this different from hiring a CTO?
Speed, cost and flexibility. A permanent CTO at this level usually means six months of searching and a six-figure salary plus equity, and it's a hard hire to judge if you're not technical yourself. We can start in weeks, at a fraction of the cost, and step away when the time's right. It's not better than the right permanent hire. It covers the couple of years before you can make one, and it usually includes helping you make it.
How long does an engagement run?
As long as it's useful, and no longer. We review it every quarter, and the goal is always to finish: we help you hire a full-time CTO and hand over everything we've decided and why. An arrangement that rolls on forever isn't fractional leadership any more. It's an expensive dependency.
How will I know you're doing a good job if I'm not technical?
It's a fair question, and one you should ask anyone you hire. We agree clear goals at the start, and report back in plain English on the decisions made, progress against the plan and what's next. Everything is reviewed with you every quarter. You'll always know what we're doing and why, and our written diagnostic is yours to show anyone you like for a second opinion.
What happens when we need a full-time CTO?
We help you hire them. We'll write the job spec, help you interview, and hand over everything we've decided and why. Hiring a CTO is hard when you're not technical yourself, so having someone who's done the job on your side of the table makes a big difference.
Do you work with our existing team, or replace them?
We work with them, almost always. Your team usually knows where the problems are. What's missing is someone senior to steer the big calls. If something does need to change, we'll tell you early and straight.
We have no developers yet. Is this still right for us?
Probably not yet, and we'd rather tell you that now. A fractional CTO steers a team, and without one there isn't much for the role to do. What you probably need first is help getting the product built: deciding what goes into version one, making the architecture calls that shape the next two years of costs, and building it. That's what our build your MVP service is for: we build the first version ourselves, quoted as a project, and it has its own page. Founders often move from that to this once the team arrives. We'd rather start you in the right place than sell you steering with nothing to steer.
Can we pay in equity instead of cash?
Yes, and it's often the better option. Advisory for equity puts technical and product leadership into your business instead of cash, or alongside it if you want to bring the monthly cost down without losing the support. Take a look at investment and equity partnerships to see how those deals work.
